MBMG International League Week 8
Soho Casuals vs Bulls Head Brazilians
( Misuwan Football Club,Sunday January 12th,14.30 k.o. )

Depleted Soho Put To The Sword.

A bit fuzzy on some of the details for this one,I think I should have worn my sun hat. Big Brazilian squad started with Danny as skipper in Boys absence and Bartek filling in at left back.Despite the return from injury of Khun Touch and the return from partying of Big Jim Vessey,Chatree and Oat retained their starting places up front.Suprisingly, perhaps,Soho by contrast had only the bare eleven and as we all know subs can sometimes make a big difference.
Finally kicked off after a delay because the officials wanted to wear yellow too ! Lots of huffing and puffing, lots and lots of needless offsides. In the end Chatree strayed off side one time too many and the furious manager swapped him for Touch. The sub knew exactly what to do about the offside trap - within minutes he had dribbled it throught the defence and cooly slotted under the keeper to break the deadlock.Minutes later Touch repeats his feat but also dribbles round the keeper this time.By this point the Yellow confidence was high and Yamine and his lads had to work hard to keep things under control.Twice George burst through from midfield for one on ones with the keeper, twice the keeper did enough to keep him out.Another effort saw great work by Sit down the left wasted as him ball into the middle was actually met with a shot but Jim Vessey blocked it to keep Soho safe.
0-2 half time.
Second half and inevitably a tiring Soho eleven found it harder and harder to retain the ball.It took about ten minutes and then Nick Smart dropped an inch-perfect cross on the forehead of mobile full back Amir and bang it's 3-0.With Chatree back on now,Touch moved to left midfield. And from left midfield went on another mazy run and wrapped up an excellent hat-trick (the third Brazilian to get a hat-trick this season). Then Chatree pops up with a wonderful strike under the keeper to finally bow the valiant Soho efforts.5-0. Only time left for secret weapon Charlton Nick to take Jims place up front and rattle home a quick brace before the final whistle.
Thanks to Soho for trying until the end and for organising the really pretty good Misuwan facilities.

    MBMG International League Week 7
Scandanavian Vikings vs Bulls Head Brazilians
    ( Dhurakij Pundit University,Saturday December 14th,16.30 k.o. )

Bullys Hit A Scandanavian Brick Wall.

Last game up before Christmas for second-placed Vikings against third-placed Brazilians was obviously a proverbial six-pointer,the Vikings looking to build a six point cushion while the Brazilians were eagerly eyeing that second spot in the table.Despite last weeks' hat-trick man Chris Shanks being out injured plus four other absences, both teams arrived at university with full squads. The Yellow Rabble continued the pattern of the season by having yet another different keeper and also having a couple of debutants (sort of) : big Neil Torrence picking up the gloves, while original Brazilian James Reid made the squad after returning to Thailand on holiday. With hundreds of fascinated student fans thronging the ground and perfect weather the scene as set for a classic Casuals encounter.
Thankful that a typically dishevelled David Breen sweating Carlsberg made his selection conundrum much easier, the manager was able to field a typical four four two.Starting with the Chatree / Big Kris axis up front the Bullys were out of the blocks fastest from the kick-off ; indeed it appeared the forward duo were harassing the Scans defence into quite a few errors. With Nick Smart and Khun Oat piling on early pressure down the left channels the effort soon paid off.Nick played Oat in down the wing,he pulled it back into the box to Chatree, who neatly picked out Kris spinning off his markers and Kris cooly lobbing the Scans keeper on the volley from just outside the six yard box.0-1 BHB.Stung into action the Scans persistantly pressed on down their right,Niclas proving to be the play-maker.This forced a sequence of corners, but with the delivery not being quite good enough the Bullys lead stood intact at half time.
Both teams had been making full use of their subs, and by the second half Bullys were fielding a Scots combo of James and Breenie up front, with Iain and Brian on down the flanks. The second half was to be a war of attrition, and by consistant pressure would prove rewarding for the Vikings. With the Brazilian midfield tiring slightly from their very demanding workrate,it was being left to Amir,Adam and Danny to patch up the gaps that were developing. As they were holding strongly the Vikings cannily moved to a three five two for the last fifteen. This was rewarded very soon with a three man break finished immaculately from the edge of the box by Niclas ( I think ),Neil having no chance with the shot connoning in off the post.Last ten it could have gone either way.James was showing lots of class up front and the return of Big Kris again causing the Scans back line nightmares, coming very very close with a strike on the turn which somehow went the wrong side of the post.At the other end a last ditch challenge from Danny gave the Scans a promising free kick position, but luckily for the anxious Brazilian bench big Neil held on to the shot shortly before the final whistle.
All in all,you have to say that the draw was a fair outcome to what was a tremendous match.Possibly the best standard I have seen in this league ever, and played in a fantastic spirit,I would imagine the Scans feel they could all have been man of the match.

  • Man of the match : Adam.

  • Scorers = BHB : Kris ,Vikings : Niclas.

  • Cards : yellow = BHB -Danny Poole.Vikings : none.

  • Final score : Vikings 1 - BHB 1.

    MBMG International League Week 6
Bulls Head Brazilians vs Bangkok United
    ( Centre Point Sports Club,Saturday December 7th,15.30 k.o. )

    Hat-trick Hero Makes The Difference.

Heading south of the river to the new home of the Brazilians,Bangkok United threatened to offer stiff resistance with a full fifteen man squad. However, after the hours of grinding traffic they seemed to have lost some bodies and started with just the two subs.Fortunately, perhaps, for them a depleted Bullys squad featured its' only true striker filling in between the sticks,Khun Oat having to step into Big Kris' gloves. It was left to the ever willing Sit and new signing beanpole Pole Bartek to fall over and miss,in the long tradition of Brazilian strikers.
Starting brightly in the sweltering heat Bangkok United looked capable of punishing a careless Yellow midfield line-up.Messers Irvine,Smart,Dean and Williams all determined to see who could give it away the most.Almost by accident the first time three passes were strung together George floated through the middle of the Japanese defence (seemingly waiting for an offside) and calmly stroked it past the keeper.Minutes after the restart another co-incidence of accurate passes saw Bartek stride majestically through the middle and hammer a daisy cutter past the keeper.Much huffing and puffing later half time was blown, the only other detail to note being the return from retirement of axeman Nat,marking the moment with a comedy shoelace tying routine after Boy had already left the field.Oh,and the Brazilians resident itinerent Brian getting offside all the time.Halftime 2-0.
Sage advice from the manager at halftime was for the Yellow Rabble to go out and get another quickly to kill the game off. So,shortly after Nat had come as close to giving away a penalty as it is possible without it being given,Bangkok United rose superbly to a corner ball,Khun Oat made a Banks-like stop on the line and some dozy pillock on the post stood daydreaming while one of the Japanese tapped in the rebound.Arse ! 2-1.Finally stirred into something like action the Yellow Rabble sent on secret weapon Gunner Chris, with Mikey making way at right midfield.A tired-looking George also retired to the clutches of a happy looking cheerleader at this point and, with Boy back at left back, the axeman was back where he belongs : holding the middle of the midfield like a marauding psycho,er I mean warrior.Inspired by this, combined with Dannys' constant prompting from the back, the Bullys finally put the foot to the floor and ran away with it.First,Chris meandered in from the right wing and slotted one home. Then he hits the touchline and sends in a cross that Iain burys with his head.Minutes later Nicks persistance pays off as the header he wins against the odds over defender and keeper drops to Chris who nicks a second and Bullys fifth. Finally,Chris shrugs off defenders twice and as he closes in on goal he pulls off an amazing Ronaldo goal-scoring trick ! Otherwise known as a toe-punt.Still,hat-trick heros are hat-trick heros, you can't take that away from him.Very gamely, the tired Bangkok United squad ravaged by cramp managed to push back one last time and pull back a second after an offside trap went tits up.And then the whistle went.

  • Man of the match : Chris Shanks.

  • Scorers = BHB : George Dean,Bartek Moskwa,Iain Irvine,Chris Shanks x 3. Bangkok United : Koutaro,Yuasa

  • Cards : none.

  • Final score : BHB 6 Bangkok United 2.

  • Attendance : 8.

    MBMG International League Week 2
Bangkok Blitz vs Bulls Head Brazilians
    ( Tamlong Thai,Saturday November 9th 2002,16.30 k.o. )

    New Boys Get Whupped.

After the frustration of the Soho game being cancelled, the rain relented to allow a Big Yellow Rabble away day jaunt out to Min Buri somwhere. Amazingly, the excitement of a new season saw sixteen plus arrive more or less on time (for once). This obviously left the management with a huge selection headache which was swiftly brought under control by assistant coach McCrindle swiftly administering 'tinnie therapy'.With a clear head of Heineken the Bullys started out with : Big Kris in between the sticks,Amir,Paul,Danny and captain 'party' Boy accross the back,Iain,George,Nick and Chris in midfield,Chatree and Oat starting up front.
New boys Blitz featured a couple of big lads and a bevvie of skirt on the sideline in a daring bid to unsettle the Yellow Rabble.Taking a while to get in the flow,a bit of wing pressure from Chris down the right took its toll and corners started bombarding the Blitz box. Thanks to BCCT routines panic started to take a hold on the Blitz defenders and eventually one unfortunate put through his own net to open the scoring.(Thanks John). This was also a cue to get Khun Touch off the bench for a debut run out, replacing Chatree. He was soon playing in Chris down the right who showed tremendous persistance to finally bury a second attempt from virtually sitting on the floor. With this he took a break and Khun Sit got on.It still wasn't one-way traffic and Blitz were giving fullbacks Boy and Amir quite a torrid time.Iain was also having a mighty kicking fest in midfield, even getting a yellow for his troubles.Still didn't stop him playing Khun Touch in for a sublime finish and a handy 0 - 3 halftime lead.
Second half saw Adam and another debut boy Bartek on for Boy and Spanner who were nursing knocks.Much the same pattern in the second half, until after ten minutes Adam decided to pull off a great save from a corner with his hand ! The assorted Brazilians on the side held their breath as a very sedate ref only booked him,but Blitz duly buried the penalty.Luckily, shortly afterwards Nick played Khun Oat in with a lovely ball for another cool finish. Shortly afterwards a bruised Blitz defender engaged Oat in a bit of a stand-to,so some tactical mastermind got a superkeen Chatree on in his place. And lo and behold the Kao Sahn Road lothario was soon wooing the ladies in the stand, when twice in four minutes Iain got him in the left chennel and both times Chadders finished with aplomb ! This wrapped it up for a demoralised but battling Blitz team and it ended up 1-6.
Thanks to everyone for a solid start, especially all the debutantes - Amir,Paul,Mike,Touch,Bartek,Chris,Iain.

  • Man of the match = Iain.

  • Scorers = BHB : O.G. Alex Stamp,Gunner Chris,Khun Touch,Khun Oat,Khun Chatree x 2. Blitz : Khun Danai (pen).
